Policy Statement

 

To ensure the accurate and timely appointment of residents approved into a USF College of Medicine specialty/subspecialty program.

 

Procedure

 

Responsible Party                                             Action

 

Resident Applicant                                            Must be a graduate from a North American medical school that is LCME or AOA accredited or have full ECFMG certification.  International medical graduates that are not U.S. citizens must have successfully received a J-1 visa.

 

Must have completed an approved course in ACLS and/or PALS.

 

Must have successfully completed USMLE steps 1 and 2 or its equivalent.

 

Provides proof that he/she is approved by the State of Florida Board of Medicine as an unlicensed physician in training or have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Florida.

 

Program Director                                              Completes a personal interview of selected resident applicants to assess ability, aptitude, communication skills, and personal qualities.

 

Once the match and the interview and selection process  are completed, notifies the Office of Graduate Medical Education of all approved residents.

Program Director                                              Maintains completed interview forms.  Provides Office of GME with dates of appointment, appointment forms, completed Human Resources paperwork, and other required documents necessary to continue with processing of residents.

 

Office of GME                                                 Completes a House Officer Contract for each resident, and sends to appropriate Program Director/Education Coordinator.

 

                                                                        Provides residents with schedule of orientation, Resident Handbook, and necessary paperwork on pagers, etc. for completion by the resident.

 

Program Director/Education                              Provides resident with completed House Officer

Coordinator                                                      Contract, parking forms, lab coat order forms, insurance forms, and departmental orientation information.

 

Occupational Health                                         Provides residents with information on employment related injuries and exposures, including exposure cards distributed at orientation.

 

Residents                                                          Returns completed paperwork to appropriate person/department.

 

Office of GME                                                 Files original House Officer Contract, with copy to Education Coordinators.  Files original appointment and parking forms, and send copy to appropriate department.

 

Resident                                                           Reports to appropriate department/program as specified.
