Policy Statement

The University of South Florida has implemented a comprehensive program that provides education, information, and activities related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).  This USF program complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the federal regulations implementing said acts.  The program includes dissemination of information to residents related to known modes of transmission, signs and symptoms of infection, associated risk factors, and procedures to control the spread of infection.  USF follows the CDC recommended principles of prevention, i.e., Universal precautions and post-exposure procedures.  Protocols are in place both at the clinical rotation sites and through the College of Medicine Health Administration Office.

For training-related health incidents (e.g., exposures) all residents must follow state and federal regulations for Worker’s Compensation. Residents are provided exposure and bloodborne pathogen training at orientation and annually through lectures, grand rounds, and/or videos.

See also Policy and Guidelines for Addressing HIV and Hepatitis B Virus Infection as adopted by the USF Health Sciences Center for additional information (see attached) and the Post-exposure Management guidelines (available in each department).
