Policy Statement

All residents enrolled in the residency training programs at the USF College of Medicine are employed in the University employment category known as OPS (Other Personnel Services).  This is a non-typical employment category in that it provides salary but no benefits or rights to the residents.  To cover these issues, the College of Medicine issues a separate contract that provides for benefits and rights, and addresses the policies and procedures that apply to residents.

The Resident Contract provided to each resident outlines the terms and conditions as listed below:

-         financial support

-         duration of appointment and conditions for reappointment

-         professional liability insurance

-         disability and health insurance

-         vacation policies

-         professional, parental and sick leave benefits

-         conditions for living quarters, meals and laundry

-         counseling services

-         resident responsibilities

-         grievance procedures

-         policy on sexual and other forms of harassment

-         professional activities outside the work environment

In regards to financial support, the GMEC and the Office of Graduate Medical Education review the salary and benefits of the housestaff on an annual basis.  The University has made a commitment that resident salaries will be maintained at the seventy-fifth percentile of the AAMC salaries for the southeastern United States.
