Mission Statement
The mission of the USF Diabetes Center is to provide professional, student and patient education to improve the Health of individuals who have diabetes mellitus. In addition, the mission is to conduct investigations into solutions for the many problems associated with diabetes mellitus.Programs and Services
Our program is certified by the American Diabetes Association as meeting the national standards for Diabetes Self Management Training.In order to schedule a class or individual consult with a member of the Diabetes Education Team, you must have a referral from your health care provider. To obtain a blank referral form for your provider to complete, please call 813/974-2583
Adult Diabetes Education
- Comprehensive diabetes self management 10 hour course
- Shorter topic driven (e.g. insulin initiation, monitoring) classes
- Individual appointments for specific diabetes challenges
- Teaching is done in discussion and lecture style
- Question and answer sessions
- Education manuals, videos, hands on practicum
- Low literacy education materials available
Pediatric Diabetes Education
- Short class sessions of 2.5 hours each
- Family group sessions
- Education provided during clinical visit time as well
- Pediatric patients and families have access to diabetes education computer games
- Games were created for USF Diabetes Center, in a collaborative effort between the Diabetes Center and the College of Engineering/Computer Science Division senior students' final project
Diabetes Nutrition Education
- Individual consults on nutrition for adults and children
- Small group classes started covering the basics of nutrition for diabetes
- Advanced nutrition concepts for pre MDI or insulin pump preparation
Florida Camps for Children and Youth with Diabetes K-12
- Bring A Friend Weekend Grades K-3 (April)
- Pee-Wee Camp Ages 6-8 (June)
- Fun Sports Camp Ages 15-18 (June)
- Camp Winona Ages 9-11,12-14 (July, August)
- Family Weekend (October)
