Electives
College of Medicine Internal Medicine

The elective courses in this accredited program are taught in well-established programs in different colleges of the University of South Florida and all have been approved by the USF Graduate School.  Students in the program will occupy available seats in courses as regularly offered and will be expected to satisfy any prerequisites required for enrollment in specific courses.  As required by the Graduate School, students may complete no more than 6 hours of course work at the 4000-level in pursuit of a Master's degree.  Elective choices will be determined by the student's area of interest with approval of the student's academic advisor.

Elective Courses

We suggest that students check the courses listed in the USF course catalogue for each semester.  Frequently courses under Humanities, Anthropology, Public Health, Philosophy, Religion, Art, etc. can be approved as electives.  When a course does not pertain directly to bioethics or medical humanities, students should seek advice and approval from the program director or designated advisor.

For example, those students concentrating on Humanities, courses such as the following might be considered: Representing Trauma, Haitian Cultural Outlook, and Latin America: Music & Literature.  The last two, with some workload adjustments, might suit students who are intent on cultural issues and healthcare.

GMS 7930 CRN 51603

June 4-June 14

Louise Bourgeois'

"Sainte Sébastienne", 1992

This course will explore the ethics, politics, and culture of contemporary reproductive and sexual health care.  Instead of restricting our attention to fetuses and women of childbearing age, we will consider reproductive and sexual health care across the life span and for both men and women, as well as those with ambiguous genders.  Topics to be considered include global reproductive rights, children's sexual health care (cliterodectomy, circumcision, the HPV vaccine), access to contraception, intersexuality and transsexuality, fertility and reproductive technology, the medicalization of male sexuality, abortion, prenatal testing and genetic selection, obstetrics and midwifery, and the politics of pregnancy.

This is an alternative calendar term.  The dates are June 4-June 14 Monday through Thursday, 12:30-5:50 pm.  The first class will be held in the College of Medicine MDC 1508A.
