Vascular & Critical Care Neurology

The missions of the Division of Vascular and Critical Care Neurology are high quality care for patients with stroke and critical neurological illnesses; education of students, residents and fellows; and clinical research.

Stroke

The Stroke Center provides comprehensive care to patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease at Tampa General Hospital (TGH), a Joint Commission-certified Primary Stroke Center and Florida State-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. The new state-of-the-art Bayshore at TGH has a 10-bed Stroke Unit, 10 bed Trauma Resuscitation Unit and full capability CT and MRI scan in the Emergency Department (ED); 2 dedicated neuroangiography suites; and a 32-bed Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit. There is a 39-bed Neurology/Neurosurgery ward in the main hospital. The Stroke Team consists of an attending vascular neurologist, a vascular neurology fellow, a PGY-3 resident, a PGY-2 resident and 0-3 medical students.

Current research activities and interests include a hospital-based Stroke Registry, acute stroke intervention and stroke prevention clinical trials, therapeutic hypothermia, stroke neuroimaging, epidemiological studies, observational studies, and others. Residents and fellows are encouraged to become involved in clinical research projects.

Neurocritical Care

The only one of its kind in Central Florida, the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (Neuro-ICU) at Tampa General Hospital is a 32-bed unit staffed by specially-trained physician faculty from the University of South Florida Departments of Neurology, Critical Care Medicine and Neurological Surgery. The Unit is equipped with advanced neuro-diagnostic apparatus including portable CT scanner, continuous EEG monitor, cerebral blood flow monitor, intracranial pressure monitoring and minimally-invasive hemodynamic monitoring platform.

The Neuro-ICU at TGH offers personalized, around-the-clock care to patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, neuromuscular emergencies, status epilepticus, traumatic brain injury, encephalitis and meningitis. Critically-ill neurological patients are admitted to the Neuro-ICU where they are closely monitored and cared for by a specialized cadre of neuro-intensive care nurses highly skilled in neurological assessment and monitoring. The Unit is well-equipped to provide sophisticated diagnostic and treatment techniques including therapeutic hypothermia, ventricular drainage and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. By constantly seeking to explore new directions, the Neuro-ICU aspires to deliver quality care to patients with life-threatening neurological diseases.
