Archie Silver, M.D

Founder, Child Development Center

Archie A. Silver, M.D., is a Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the University Of South Florida College Of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at New York University College of Medicine. He was Director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at University of South Florida from 1979-2003. He was also Founder and Director of the Child Development Center from 1998-2003. Dr. Silver’s interests are in developmental disorders of children. He has written extensively in this field and has authored or co-authored five books. He has received several prestigious awards including those from American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for preventive psychiatry and learning disorders.


Wade C. Myers, M.D.

Dr. Myers, M.D. joined USF in 2005. He is a Professor and Chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Program. From 2001-2005 he served as Chief of the Division of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Florida. He has completed fellowships in both child and adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry and is board-certified in these specialties. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and one book. He principal research interests are in the areas of juvenile delinquency, crime, and homicide. He is a reviewer for multiple journals and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Forensic Sciences and the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. From 2001-2002 he served as President of the Florida Psychiatric Society. He has served as a forensic psychiatry consultant in 14 states.


Francisco Fernandez, M.D.

Dr. Fernandez joined USF in 2002 as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine. After Dr. Silver’s retirement in July 2003, Dr. Fernandez assumed the directorship of the Center while a national search for a successor is underway. His career interests have been in psychiatric complications of medical illness, psychiatric education, and integration of psychiatric clinical programs into medical and surgical healthcare delivery systems.

Brenda Curtwright, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Ms. Curtwright is a Speech-Language Pathologist with career interests in the area of language disorders in children diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. At the Center, she evaluates the communication skills of children, ages 3-21 years, with behavioral challenges. She provides speech, phonology, and language assessment services to children with developmental, physical, and mental disabilities.

Humberto Nagera, M.D.
Professor of Psychiatry

Director, The Carter-Jenkins Center

Dr. Nagera is the Chief of the ADHD clinic for children, adolescents, and adults and pursues research in the genetics of this disorder. He maintains a psychoanalytic practice for all ages and is the Director of The Carter-Jenkins Center, a non-profit organization affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry at USF. The CJC is devoted to the improvement of mental health across the world.Dr.Nagera is a Professor Emeritus of the University of Michigan where he was the Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Director of The Youth Services of The Department of Psychiatry for several years.


R. Douglas Shytle, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Child Development Center

Is an Assistant Professor in the Child Development Center and the Center for Excellence Aging and Brain Repair, Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, Neurosurgery, Pharmacology, Psychology, and the Neuroscience Program at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.

His interests involve both basic and clinical neuropsychopharmacology into various disorders of the brain. Within this domain, his focused research has been with Tourette’s syndrome and the therapeutic potential of nicotinic receptor ligands for various neuropsychiatric disorders.

Berney J. Wilkinson, Ph.D., NCSP

Dr. Wilkinson is an Educational Specialist with subspecialty in school psychology, pediatric psychology and neuropsychology. As a licensed school psychologist, he provides comprehensive evaluations and designs treatment plans for children with learning disabilities and their families. At the Center, he serves as the Project Director for the Continuity of Care Educational Program.
