Curriculum
The five-year diagnostic radiology residency program at USF is designed to provide residents with direct clinical participation in all aspects of diagnostic radiology with graduated levels of responsibility under the supervision of attending faculty physicians. During their first clinical year, residents spend six months in internal medicine, three months in surgery, and three months in diagnostic radiology. Beginning in their second year of training, residents initially review and interpret radiographic studies on their clinical rotations with all studies then subsequently reviewed by a faculty attending prior to dictating or finalizing the report. For interventional procedures, based on their level of training and competence, residents serve as the primary operators under the direct supervision of the attending physician. In addition to a broad clinical experience at USF’s affiliated teaching facilities, the Department offers formal educational training in the form of case conferences and didactic lectures that cover the nine major subspecialties of diagnostic radiology as well as present a foundation for diagnostic radiology physics.

Case Conferences and Didactic Lectures
Although it varies for some of the case conferences at each institution, the typical format for resident case conferences is either a staff member or other resident with staff supervision showing cases to a resident who then discusses the case and differential diagnoses. The conferences are usually based on a particular subject area of diagnostic radiology. A quality assurance conference is held approximately every other month on the fifth Friday or Monday.
A weekly didactic lecture series runs every Wednesday from 8:30-9:30 a.m. with lectures covering the nine major subject areas of diagnostic radiology on a rotating basis. In addition, subspecialty lectures and supplemental lectures on related clinical topics are integrated into the weekly conference schedule.
All residents are required to attend these conferences except for residents rotating on night float rotations and at All Children’s Hospital, where rotating residents can participate in multidisciplinary clinical, pediatric resident, and medical student conferences, and pediatric grand rounds. All residents who are not on a night float rotation are required to attend the Wednesday morning conference and lecture.

Physics
First year radiology residents participate in an 11 week introductory physics course given in the fall of their PGY-2 year. An on-site, one-week review course is given to PGY-3 residents in June or July preceding the American Board of Radiology physics examination. The department also pays the tuition for a physics review course that the residents typically take prior to the examination.
Mock Oral Board Examination
In May of each year, a mock oral board examination is given for senior radiology residents in preparation for the oral American Board of Radiology certification examination which is currently given at the end of the fourth diagnostic radiology year.
Residents' Day
All PGY 2-4 residents are required annually to select a topic in diagnostic radiology, complete a project on that topic, and prepare a scientific presentation. Research projects with faculty are encouraged. The residents give their presentations in mid June of each year at a scientific forum at which faculty members, community radiologists and USF alumni radiologists comprise the audience. An educational stipend is given for the presentation judged to be most scientifically meritorious. Faculty members are available to sponsor each resident's topic and to provide guidance and research help.
Journal Club
Residents and faculty gather bimonthly in the evening to review important topics from the radiology literature, with residents reviewing and presenting the merits of the articles followed by discussions. Dinner is paid for by the department.
National Meetings
Residents are encouraged to become involved in academic clinical research projects with faculty in the Department of Radiology. These are usually done in collaboration with radiology faculty members. When the resident presents research in the form of abstracts, papers, or exhibits at national meetings, the resident receives additional leave time as well as monetary support for the presentation.
