College of Medicine · Surgery

Thank you for your interest in the University of South Florida Urology Residency Program. The program accepts three residents per year. Residents are expected to complete one year of pre-urology as a PGY-1in General Surgery at the University of South Florida under the direction of Richard C. Karl, MD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Dr. Charles Paidas, Program Director, General Surgery Residency Program. Occasionally, residents who have completed their surgery at another institution are appointed to our four-year Urology Residency Program. Residents who successfully complete their general surgery pre-urology PGY-1 year then enter the Urology Residency Program at the PGY-2 level for four years. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, residents are qualified to take the American Board of Urology examination.

Residents in the University of South Florida's Urology Residency Program benefit from excellence in resident training at the following affiliate hospitals:  Tampa General Hospital (TGH), H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (MCC), and the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital (VA). The Pediatric rotation is conducted at Nemours Children's Clinic (Orlando Regional Healthcare System). Residents conduct six-month rotations through the various hospitals. The Urology Residency Program faculty includes physicians from each of the practice sites, thus providing resident trainees exposure to a dynamic group of urologists who received training at a multitude of institutions.

The parent institution is Tampa General Hospital (TGH). TGH serves as the primary teaching hospital for the University of South Florida College of Medicine. TGH is a private, not-for-profit, 877-bed hospital that provides some of the most advanced medical care in the region. At Tampa General Hospital, residents receive training in adult and pediatric urology. Residents participate in all private cases and are involved in the surgical care of the patients. The TGH rotation is intended to provide clinical and surgical experience in adult (male and female) urologic conditions. This tertiary care facility provides exposure to complex genitourinary cases including emergency room service consultations.

The H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute (MCC) is located on the main campus of the University of South Florida. Julio Pow-Sang, MD serves as the Chief of Urology at the MCC. In 2001, the National Cancer Institute awarded Moffitt the status of a Comprehensive Cancer Center in recognition of its excellence in research and contributions to clinical trials, prevention and cancer control. Additionally, Moffitt is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a prestigious alliance of the country's leading cancer centers, and is listed in the U.S. News & World Report as one of the top cancer hospitals in America.

The MCC has a high volume of cancer patients seen in the outpatient clinics and in-house. Subsequently, there are a large number of radical surgical procedures performed annually. There are two residing residents at MCC at all times. The rotation at MCC is designed to provide clinical and surgical experience in adult (male and female) uro-oncology services. This tertiary care facility provides exposure to complex uro-oncology cases.  The clinical casework at the MCC also lends experience in the assessment and management of psycho-socio and palliative care issues unique to the cancer patient. The site offers exceptional hands-on experience through participation in multidisciplinary clinics involving surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, geriatric oncologists, and radiation oncologists.

The Urology Program at the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital (VA) is under the direction of Mary Hall, MD. The VA Hospital presents a large volume of surgical urology patients for resident training. The rotation at the VA is intended to provide clinical and surgical experience in specialized adult (primarily male) genitourinary services. The institution provides exposure to complex urology cases.  The clinical casework also lends experience to the assessment and management of a group of psycho-socio and socio-economic problems prevalent among the Veteran's Hospital patient population. Residents complete their rotation at the VA during the PGY-3 yea, which includes a six-month clinical research rotation at the VA.

The Residency Program at the Nemours Children's Clinic in Orlando is under the direction of Michael Keating, MD. The Urology Clinic at Nemours is a unique child and family centered environment providing provides specialized care for complex problems. Residents benefit from hospital training at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children (281-bed hospital which includes 96 pediatric beds) and Orlando Regional Medical Center (581-bed level 1 Trauma Center). Nemours provides specialized urology services for children with complex problems and needs. The pediatric rotation is conducted during the PGY-4 year and is intended to provide clinical and surgical experience in specialized uro-oncology services for children. Nemous provides exposure to complex pediatric urology cases not available at the other program institutions. In addition to the Nemours Children's Clinic, resident receive state-of-art training at Arnold Palmer Hospital and the Orlando Regional Medical Center.
